Research: Previous short films

10th July.
Preparation for making our own short films/trailers

CINEMA 16. BFI RELEASE. BRIAN PERCIVAL 2001. SILVER FILMS.

(Looking at different ways of presenting films)

Considering:-

  • Mise en Scene
  • Editing- Pace
  • Shots- camera angles.
  • Narrative
  • Representation

1. About a girl.

Walking along- moving/shaky camera suits the theme. Script driven, Focusing on one character following her life. Set in a very lower class area. Few other characters featured such as dad and mum etc.. Very Powerful message behind the film, representation of teenage pregnancy. Makes you think. Music of Britney Spears 'stronger' is ironic.

2. Boy on a Bicycle.

Ridley Scott. Black and white short film. Voiceover at the beginning, exploring camera angles well. Not following an eye line.

Tip: With short films you can take risks & be artistic. As the film is only a short period you only have to catch audiences' attention for a short while.

3. Dear Phone.
Tip: don't stick on one thing too long. It gets boring. I am planning to film lots so i have a massive range of clips to choose from. I didn't rate this short film.

4. Doodlebug
Music makes narrative. 3 minutes long.

5. Telling Lies

4 minutes. Simon Ellis
Conversation on phone, not really what i am looking to do for my coursework.

6. Joyride

Jim Gillespie. 1995. Channel 4+BFI
Effective music-> key convention of horror film , different shots- fitting in with the horror theme. Not the theme i am going for, for my documentry however the use of sound, mise en scene is very effective.

MUSIC: BEN HOWARD. THE WOLVES. -> really suits the film. Need to consider what music i will use in my documentry.
Fantastic use of camera angles and shot types.
